Redheads could become extinct as Scotland gets sunnier, experts have claimed.
The gene that causes red hair is thought to be an evolutionary response to the lack of sun in Scotland.
Redhead colouring allows people to get the maximum vitamin D from what little sun there is.
Only one to two per cent of the world’s population has red hair but in Scotland the figure is about 13 per cent, or 650,000 people.
However, the figure could fall dramatically – and even see redheads die out completely in a few centuries – if predictions that the country’s climate is set to become much sunnier are true.
Dr Alistair Moffat, boss of genetic testing company ScotlandsDNA, said: “We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and the north of England is adaptation to the climate. We do not get enough sun and have to get all the vitamin D we can.
“If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, there would be fewer people carrying the gene.”
What would kill off redheads? More to the point, what would cause such early deaths among redheads that they would die without reproducing offspring? The story seems to assume an “X-men-Marvel-comic-book” view of evolution in which mutations happen at random or in some mysterious connection to the environment. But that’s not the way Darwinian evolution is supposed to work. Traits that don’t allow an animal to survive are supposed to die out–along with the animals that have the trait and fail to pass it on. In the modern world, there is no reason for people who don’t need as much vitamin D from the sun (assuming that is really what is going on in redheads) to die and fail to have children before they do.
Thanks to modern technology we have sunscreen and indoors.
With these sorts of stupid stories being published and broadcast, it is no wonder that the BBC has stated that it wants to censor climate change skepticism. (I don’t know that BBC has published this particular story, but they want to push many of the same caliber.)

It will soon become more difficult for climate change skeptics to disagree with the consensus view on programs aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The BBC Trust, which is the BBC’s governing body, published a new report on Thursday that says that Britain’s largest news organization has been giving “undue attention to marginal opinion” on certain controversial scientific issues, including man-made climate change.
To combat what it calls a “false balance” on the issue, the trust’s report called for more BBC staffers to attend courses and seminars to help them learn how to bring their programming in line with what the BBC Trust accepts as the consensus view.
Climate change skepticism is “marginal opinion,” while disappearing redheads is science!
Sure it is.
I don’t blame the BBC for wanting to shush independent scientists. People pushing myths rely on political power to stifle the truth.
